I went to the theatre to see the movie and was expecting a funny and entertaining popcorn flick. That’s also what we got! The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a typical Disney movie, with lots of action, humor and nice effects. Story wise, well it’s not that special but it’s still trying to go into a new direction. And that’s most of all, what I liked about the movie.
Dave Stutler who is a clumsy physics student is helping Balthazar Blake on his mission to save the world. Balthazar who is a master sorcerer is teaching his young apprentice how to use magic to fight against the dark forces. The unusual team will have to fight numerous enemies but also, in Dave’s case, try to win the heart of the girl of his dreams.
It’s also worth mentioning that it is not a hazard that Dave’s character reminds of Mickey Mouse in the classic animated Disney movie Fantasia. The similarities are deliberate especially in one specific scene of the movie and it is fun to notice them!
Being a big fan of Jon Turteltaub’s work, especially the National Treasure movies (I’m still waiting for the next one!!) it wasn’t difficult for me to like it. And for people who have listened to the National Treasure Soundtracks as much as I did, certainly noticed the similarities between that one and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice one. Which isn’t a bad thing.
The cast consists of known actors such as Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina and Monica Bellucci but also people who are not so known by the big crowd (or let’s say, not yet!) as Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer.
It might not be a movie for everyone since it is made for a younger public but in my eyes it’s refreshing and it would be really nice if they plan on doing a second one!!
