Gamescom has been over for two weeks now and I have finally recovered from everything 😎 These few days in Cologne were great and I am really thankful that I had the opportunity to go there again this year. It was an incredible trip, I met many new people and I found out about new video games that will be released next year, I can not wait to play them and get video game services from ElitistGaming! Needless to say that it was really tiring and getting enough sleep was quite hard.
But no need to write about the whole trip there, so let’s just take a closer look at some games from this year’s gamescom: Resident Evil 6, DmC, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin’s Creed III, ZombiU, Splinter Cell Blacklist, The Last of Us, Dishonored, Borderlands 2, Injustice: Gods Among Us and so many more.
If you wanted to play the most popular games for a few minutes, I suggest that you arrive early or else expect to wait for a few hours at least. But in my eyes, waiting over 8 hours to play some Assassin’s Creed 3 is ridiculous, especially since the game comes out in a few months.
I must admit that I was a bit disappointed in the amount of games we played during these three days: ZombiU, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, Assassin’s Creed 3, God of War: Ascension and Ni No Kuni. Ok, some very good titles but considering how many games which were playable there… I really wanted to play more. But the amount of people who were also waiting made it hard because there is no way that I would stand in line for more than 2 hours to play a game for 5 minutes.
We did wait 1h30 for ZombiU but for a good reason: I really wanted to test the WiiU and my impressions are mixed. On one hand, I was impressed by the controller! It felt nice, wasn’t too heavy and the touchscreen will bring interesting gameplay if it is used the right way of course. In ZombiU, well it is used in an interesting way for equipping your weapons for example but on the other hand, if you are focused on the tablet, you just can’t be on the TV screen at the same time and you might get attacked. I was expecting ZombiU to be more special in one way but it wasn’t really and I have to admit that the graphics didn’t look amazing… I would go for the WiiU immediately if the launch titles would be more interesting but they aren’t really for now. Maybe the price will change things, I don’t know yet. But I guess that the best way to know if you like the console is to try it by yourself if you have the chance to once it’s out.
We didn’t wait for 8 hours to play Assassin’s Creed 3, only about 1 hour and this at Sony’s booth where you could play one of the missions where you have to control a ship. Interesting and new gameplay indeed from the franchise, I had some difficulties but I suppose that it will work fine once I can play it by myself 😛 Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation was also playable and I loved the graphics and the new character. The controls seemed to work fine and I’m sure that many people are really waiting for this game for the Vita.
I was also really excited to play Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale: it’s a game I have been waiting for so long and I think it’s nice to use some famous Sony characters in a fighting game like that. Yes, it felt like Super Smash Bros. and it was a bit chaotic. But I had no idea of the controls so it made it harder to play of course. Two people were playing it on the Vita and the other two on the PS3 and in my opinion, the PS3 version was better than the Vita version. But I’m still really excited to play this game with a few friends and as you can see, I was already using Nathan Drake when we played it at gamescom. :green:
God of War: Ascension still plays like a good old God of War game but it looked more colorful and prettier. I was impressed. Even if I didn’t play it personally, the multiplayer also looked fun. Finally, a game I was so happy to play there and apparently, others weren’t since they were too busy playing One Piece, Ni No Kuni: Colorful, magical, adorable. A game I have been waiting for and following since it has been announced. I just wish more people would be interested in these sort of games.
All in all, this year’s gamescom had lots of games to propose, even if not too many very new titles were announced. The problem will always be the waiting time to play a game and the fact that very often, you don’t even know if you are able to play a game or just watch a video inside the different booths. Best thing is to make a sort of plan or wishlist of games you really want to try out first and not just waste time on a booth you might not really want to see. Waiting 1h30 for ZombiU for example was long but I’m glad we waited that time. Sure that if we would have waited until Saturday, it might have taken 2 or even 3 hours to play the game. Just to show an example. So planning in advance is in my eyes quite important for an event like this one.
I cannot write an article like that without mentioning the few goodies and things I bought there this year. They were not handing out many free things this year, that is true and really sad. But since they had many different little shops, I did waste my money on a few unnecessary things I always wanted there :green: A Portal 2 Turret Plush, Garrus action figure and a Companion Cube plush. I also got myself a really nice Portal shirt and a few books and DVDs in Cologne.
Since I don’t want to clutter this article too much with photos, I made a flickr account where I will upload photos more often in the future but more on that in another article I plan on writing. I created a special album for gamescom 2012 where I uploaded photos from the different games and random things I found there. So in case you are interested to see more, it’s over here. I guess that in this case, it’s easier for people to look at pictures than if I try to explain everything you could find there 😉
Finally, I’m still really happy that I had the chance to experience this. Where I come from, there are not many games related conventions and events like this one and Cologne is a three hour car ride from here so it’s still ok. Doing everything in one day is extremely stressful so I’m really glad we stayed longer and had also the chance that our hotel was not too far away from the city and gamescom itself.
In case you want to go next year, the dates are already announced: gamescom 2013 will be open for everyone from the 22.08 – 25.08.
I hope this article was somehow interesting and I will make sure to write again about gamescom 2013 if I manage to go 😉
