2017 has been far from a good year for me, but I don’t want to talk about all the bad things that happened last year for now. Instead, I want to focus on the things that made me happy! 2017 was for example a fantastic year for gaming. I also watched plenty of anime, started some new shows, collected more figures and discovered some new books. Hope you are sitting comfortably, because this is going to be a long one!
Since 2017 has been a bit less eventful than the previous year, I decided to focus more on my favorite games, books and shows this time around. At the same time, I’ll take a quick look at the things I’m most excited for in 2018!
The most exciting part of 2017 were my first two cons I went to: Walker Stalker Con (London) in March and Heroes and Villains (London) in May. I really wanted to blog about those two cons last year, but ended up lacking the time to write a big post about both events. Being a big fan of The Walking Dead, Gotham and other comic book shows, the decision was quickly made to go to WSC and later on spontaneously planned the HVFF trip, after enjoying the previous con so much. We loved both cons and are really happy with the guests we met! Everyone was lovely, we met plenty of fantastic people and had so much fun taking photos with celebrities or shopping at the many different booths.
A bit later in the year, I went to gamescom for a couple of days of intense gaming with friends! A few weeks later, I went back to London to see a play and met Matt Ryan again. From there, we travelled to Belfast for some sightseeing and went to the Titanic museum. Later on, we were back in Dublin for some relaxing days and shopping. I enjoyed all of those trips so much and hopefully I will be able to travel just as much in 2018.
It was hard to pick a game of the year to be honest. If I would have to pick one, it would be Nier: Automata, but I loved Persona 5, Danganronpa V3, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Horizon: Zero Dawn just as much. Assassin’s Creed also came back and I really enjoyed the latest game of the franchise, Origins. I played it for almost 80 hours. Then, the Nintendo Switch released which came with plenty of good games like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2! In general, I played many pretty long games and very few indies or shorter titles, which will hopefully change this year.
My most anticipated games are definitely Detroit: Become Human, Far Cry 5 and Ni No Kuni II, but also Kingdom Hearts III, if they really release it this year 😜 I also want to play certain games I picked up last year but unfortunately had no time to play yet.
Every year, I tell myself to watch more movies and every year, this plan completely fails. I rarely watch movies at home because my evenings often consist of playing games or watching shows. So there is often not much time for 2-hour movies. I did see a bunch of films at the cinema like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales , Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. My favorite ones had to be It, The Greatest Showman and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.
I already know that 2018 is going to be a big movie year for me: Pacific Rim: Uprising, Avengers Infinty War, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and most importantly… MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 6 😍😍😍 (if you follow me on Twitter, you know how much I love this franchise and must probably be sick of me talking about it all the time).
In 2017, I was still watching the same shows like The Walking Dead, Gotham, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Agents of SHIELD. I still enjoy them, but I definitely see that the quality is dropping in most of them. It’s hard for me to commit to new shows, especially if there are more seasons to catch up on. But for some reason I got into Bates Motel at the beginning of the year, binged the entire show in a couple of months and I LOVED IT! I also started shows like Legion, Marvel’s Runaways and The Gifted. I also finally subscribed to Netflix, so I was able to watch most of the Marvel shows like Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and the Defenders. At the end of the year, for Christmas to be precise, I binged Erased and absolutely adored it! Even if you haven’t read the manga or watched the anime before, it’s a show I can only recommend!
I’m not too sure which shows are coming out later this year, but I’m definitely excited for the final season of 12 Monkeys (I’m so sad it’s ending). I also plan on continuing some older shows I stopped watching a while ago. I also started watching The 100 in January, so I’m probably going to catch up on that before I start anything else!
2017 was a pretty good year for anime. Inuyashiki would have been my favorite anime of the year if it wasn’t for that extremely rushed ending. It’s too bad, because the show really had potential and looked fantastic. I was so happy that the new Shingeki no Kyojin season finally aired and I’m glad they kept it at 13 episodes because this season was great! Other shows I adored were Welcome to the Ballroom, Recovery of an MMO Junkie and The Ancient Magus’ Bride, which is still airing.
2018’s winter season has been pretty good so far, with shows like Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card Arc, A Place Farther than the Universe, Pop Team Epic and After the Rain. We are also getting more sequels this year, so it’s time to step up my game and catch up on certain anime that I might have missed before!
I usually get the most reading done when I commute but the time spent in public transport has been pretty short last year. So unfortunately, I didn’t read as much as planned. Some titles I really enjoyed were Geekerella and One of Us Is Lying. In the manga department, I was reading a lot of Haikyuu and Welcome to the Ballroom (I can’t stop staring at the gorgeous art in both manga). As for graphic novels, I seriously cut down on series. I have a few in mind that I want to continue like Batgirl, Squirrel Girl, Nightwing, Archie and obviously Saga, but I’m done buying every single volume of superheroes I’m not that interested in anymore, for the sake of having the “complete story”.
I already purchased way too many books this year I was really excited about like Batman by Marie Lu, The Cruel Prince by Holly Black and Zenith by Sasha Alsberg & Lindsay Cummings. So let’s just hope that I will be able to read a bit more at night instead of watching random youtube videos 🙄 (I know it’s bad, but it’s often the only thing that manages to calm me down and make me sleep).
I apologize for the crowded mess that is my figure shelf right now, but it seriously needs to be reorganized (note to self: buy less figures this year). Anyway, I got a few new scales last year, like the Fullmetal Alchemist ones, the protagonist from Persona 5, Victor from Yuri on Ice and Kamina from Gurren Lagann. The MakoHaru Free! figure got pushed back twice and it was worth the wait since it’s gorgeous, even if I’m not the biggest fan of the dark blue base. I also moved all of my nendoroids into my cabinet, where they fit perfectly! It’s just a bit messy right now, because I’m still waiting for some “display steps” which will make it easier to display all of them. The nendoroid hype train didn’t stop last year either and I kept getting 2-3 new figures every month. I just can’t resist ordering them and I got the bad habit of wanting complete collections as well (like the Haikyuu ones… 💸💸 ).
The nendoroid army will keep growing in 2018 and there are so many of them I cannot wait to get my hands on! 😍 At least I have less scales on pre-order (for now).
My 14 year old self was screaming of joy when Papa Roach released a new album and when I finally saw them live! It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to and my love for this band keeps growing.
Thanks to anime openings, I often discover new bands which was the case with Inuyashiki’s fantastic opening. The song “My Hero” is performed by the band “Man with a Mission”, who are also known for songs like “Database”, “Raise Your Flag” (both also anime OPs) or “Dead End in Tokyo”. I’ve been listening to their songs on repeat for weeks. Speaking of anime, new season of Attack on Titan also means new OST, which made me extremely happy! Even if you are not a huge fan of the show, the music is so worth listening to and really pumps you up!
The Hans Zimmer Live CD finally got released last year as well and it was amazing to listen to some of my favorite tracks performed live again. I’m still sad that Hans and his band didn’t come back to Luxembourg last year during his tour. Would have loved to see the concert again! My very last music obsession of the year was “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack, which is one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever listened to. Make sure you listen to it if you have a few minutes, it’s really worth it, especially if you like musicals!
That wraps up my best of 2017 post! If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading! 💖
